Kern County Public Works operates seven (7) recycling & sanitary landfills, seven (7) transfer stations, and one (1) bin site. Residents are not charged a waste disposal fee for ordinary household trash. See specific disposal sites for Residential or Commercial waste disposal fees.

Waste Examples

Appliances: Refrigerators, stoves, ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, washers and dryers, water heaters, etc.

Construction or Demolition Waste: Plywood, drywall, roof shingles, lumber, concrete, asphalt, etc.

Dead Animals: Dogs, cats, horses, cows, pigs, deer, sheep and goats, etc.

Electronics: Televisions, computer monitors and towers, alarm clocks, stereos, boom boxes, virtually anything with a cord.

Furniture: Sofas, chairs, tables, mattresses, dressers, desks, shelves, etc.

Green Waste: Grass, plant clippings, tree limbs, branches, etc.

Household Trash: regular kitchen waste, bathroom trash, municipal garbage, etc.

Tires: Light duty tires (18” diameter rim or smaller), heavy duty tires (19” to 24” diameter rims), oversize tires (racing tires and tires with more than 24” rims), bulk loads and earth mover tires.

Treated Wood: fencing, railroad ties or telephone pole type materials.

Used Motor Oil: Cars, trucks, tractors, farm equipment, etc.

What is Non-Chargeable Residential Waste

Non-chargeable residential waste, in general, is any household or yard waste that would normally go into a residential waste can.

There are other household waste items that can also be disposed of without cost. Examples: large appliances (stoves, refrigerators, washers and dryers); furniture (sofas, chairs, desks, patio furniture and mattresses) and tree trimmings.

All disposal sites are closed: New Year’s Day, Easter Sunday, 4th of July, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day
