Temporary Tehachapi Transfer Station to Open Ahead of the Tehachapi Landfill Closure

Effective Monday, February 9, 2026, Kern County Public Works will open a temporary Tehachapi Transfer Station as the Tehachapi Sanitary Landfill nears its waste capacity.

Important Service Changes Starting February 9

The temporary Tehachapi Transfer Station will service the solid waste handling needs for residential and commercial customers. Due to operational limitations at the temporary Tehachapi Transfer Station, the following waste materials and load types from customers will no longer be accepted and will be redirected to nearby Bakersfield Metropolitan (Bena) Sanitary Landfill or Mojave-Rosamond Sanitary Landfill.

 Kern County Public Works’ Solid Waste division is currently designing a new permanent transfer station to serve the Tehachapi community. The facility is anticipated to be operational in 2028.

What to Expect During the Transition

  • Temporary increase in wait times may occur
  • No additional fees will be applied
  • Monthly Household Hazardous Waste Collection Events will continue as scheduled at this location
