Kern County Public Works Awarded $44K Grant to Construct Bicycle Facilities

Post Date:03/03/2026 4:28 PM

Kern County Public Works has secured grant funding from the California Department of Transportation’s Transportation Development Act (TDA) to support the construction of new bicycle facilities within Kern County parks – strengthening its Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program.

In collaboration with the Kern Council of Governments (KernCOG), the project includes the installation of five (5) public benches with integrated bicycle parking, as well as three (3) bicycle repair stations. These amenities were strategically installed at key access points within County parks at the beginning and end of the Kern River Parkway Trail to enhance accessibility and convenience for trail users.

The new bicycle facilities are now open at Lake Ming, Hart Memorial Park, and Lake Buena Vista. Additional locations to be added as the program continues to grow.

Professional-Grade Bicycle Repair Stations

“The bicycle repair stations make it easier than ever for cyclists to stay safe and keep riding. Each station features a user-friendly air pump that works with both Schrader and Presta valves, the two most common valve types, so riders can quickly inflate their tires and get back on the trail,” said Kern County Public Works Planner II, Logan Clairday. “To help with unexpected flats or quick adjustments, the repair stations include tire levers, Allen wrenches, and standard bike wrenches. Whether it’s tightening a loose seat, adjusting handlebars, or removing a wheel, cyclists have the basic tools they need right at their fingertips.”
