Looking for compost in Kern County? Kern County Public Works has you covered.
Located at 17621 Scofield Avenue in Shafter, the Shafter-Wasco Compost Facility is a major sustainability hub for the region. Capable of generating 40,000 tons of high-quality compost every year, the facility aims to strengthen Kern County’s residential, commercial, and agricultural landscape by enriching soil and promoting water conservation.
Our compost is a blend of grass, brush, tree trimmings, and food scraps. The materials are screened, ground, and mixed into large heaps where they are closely monitored for over 75 days. During this period, natural biological microorganisms break down organic matter, causing the heaps to maintain internal temperatures between 135°F and 165°F. This process naturally eliminates pathogens and weed seeds, leaving behind nutrient-rich compost. To ensure a high-quality product, contaminants like plastics and metals are removed during both the initial and final processing stages. Finished compost is lab tested, and the analysis is available upon request.

Practical Benefits of Composting
According to the US Compost Council, there are several benefits to incorporating compost into your gardens, landscapes, and properties. Packed with organic, slow-release nutrients, compost revitalizes your soil and promotes healthier, faster-growing plants. It improves your soil’s water holding capacity, which ensures better drainage while protecting against erosion and ponding. Properly integrated compost is a powerful water-saving tool, as it cuts down on your personal water costs while protecting our County’s vital groundwater reserves. Compost provides a natural alternative that cuts the Central Valley's reliance on synthetic fertilizers. Ultimately, compost supports soil health, climate goals, and a circular agriculture system.
Practical Application of Compost
Compost is a remarkably versatile tool, essential for everything from cultivating nutritious food and beautifying landscapes to managing drainage and environment remediation. By enriching your existing soil with compost, we don't just grow healthier plants – we build resilient communities and a thriving, regenerative local economy.
Compost serves as an excellent soil amendment, enhancing soil texture while boosting nutrient and water retention. Since Kern County soil often lacks essential nutrients that plants need to thrive, blending in compost is one of the most effective ways to improve your yard, garden, and landscape.
